“We got zero notice”
A P&O marine engineer has told Telegraph reporter Andrew Quinn of the redundancy package which was offered to the workers.
Soon after employees were told that they were being sacked, they received an email which detailed their severance package.
The email said that in order to receive the enhanced severance package, employees must sign it by the end of March.
This is two and a half weeks’ pay per year worked with the company plus additional payments for short notice.
The father-of-one, who lives with his girlfriend and her two children, said: “If we don’t sign it, then we get the statutory severance package, which is three times smaller than what the enhanced one is.
“We’re advised by the union not to sign anything at the minute.”
The 34-year-old, who has worked for P&O for a decade, said: ” I’m shocked more than anything… [We got] literally zero notice. One day you’re happy in your job and the next day, you’re told you’re gone.”
